Lightning protection system
Lightning strikes can cause significant damage to buildings, including fires or damaged wiring. A lightning protection system combines external and internal lightning protection to minimize or prevent such damage.
External lightning protection consists of air-termination systems, down conductors, and grounding systems, while internal lightning protection provides surge protection for electrical devices.
Lightning protection is only legally required for certain buildings after a risk assessment, such as public buildings over 20 meters high, high-rise buildings, and facilities such as hospitals and schools.
Maintenance: The most important points
- Lightning protection classes regulate the inspection cycle, with shorter intervals applying to potentially explosive systems. Maintenance includes testing of the internal lightning protection and external components.
- Inspection of a lightning protection system by a lightning protection specialist with appropriate training and at least five years of professional experience in accordance with DIN EN 62305-3 (VDE 0185-305-3), Section 7
- Repair services
- Confirmation of performance by preparing test reports and affixing test labels
